Alan Shearer names new player of the season contender after Liverpool overcome Everton

Alan Shearer has suggested that Liverpool left-back Andrew Robertson should be considered for the Premier League player of the season award after his starring role in the Reds’ 2-0 victory over Everton in the Merseyside derby.

The Scotland international sparkled throughout the evening at Anfield despite a somewhat tricky afternoon for Jurgen Klopp ’s men as they continued their pursuit of Manchester City at the top of the table.

Frank Lampard ’s Everton - fighting hard against the threat of relegation to the Championship - managed to keep their hosts at arms’ length throughout the majority of the clash before Robertson opened the scoring just past the hour mark with a headed finish from Mohamed Salah ’s cross.

Belgian forward Divock Origi was then on hand late on to extend his excellent record in Merseyside derbies and of course seal what could be a crucial three points for Liverpool. Following the game, former striker Shearer claimed that the Scottish defender should potentially be in the running for player of the season come the end of the campaign. Writing in a tweet, he said: "Got to be a player of the season contender Andy Robertson?"

It is certainly difficult to argue with Shearer’s assessment despite the stunning showings of his somewhat more headline-grabbing teammates such as Salah and Virgil van Dijk. The 28-year-old has made 40 appearances for the Reds in all competitions so far this season.

In that time, he has provided 15 assists - ten of those coming in the Premier League alone. Prior to his goal against Everton, the former Hull City man had found the net once previously so far this season - that strike coming in the dramatic 2-2 draw with Tottenham Hotspur back in December, a game he was also awarded a red card.

The win over Everton leaves Liverpool well in the mix to claim the Premier League title come the end of the campaign. They sit just one point behind Pep Guardiola ’s Manchester City with five games yet to play.

Elsewhere, the Toffees are certainly in dire straights. Having dropped into the relegation zone prior to taking on the Reds due to Burnley ’s win over Wolverhampton Wanderers, that is a position they remain in having failed to claim anything at Anfield.

They currently find them two points adrift of the Clarets - albeit with a game in hand - and face Chelsea this Sunday as they aim to escape from the looming threat of relegation to the second tier of English football for the first time in over 70 years.

Following the game, Robertson himself fired a brutal dig at Everton, keen to remind the Toffees of their current plight. "I've been in a relegation battle before, so I know what it's like," he told Sky Sports. "It was tough, we started playing their game and not our own game.”
