Alan Shearer names Liverpool defender as his Premier League player of the season

Alan Shearer has suggested Andy Robertson should be considered for this year's Premier League Player of the Season award after the Liverpool left-back starred in the 2-0 Merseyside derby win over Everton.

Robertson set the Reds on their way to a vital victory, which was sealed by substitute Divock Origi, and then made a crucial goal-line clearance to stop Alex Iwobi from tapping in a Dele Alli cross.

It was Robertson's second goal of the season, having scored against Tottenham Hotspur earlier in the campaign, and his seventh for the club since his arrival on Merseyside in 2017.

And Shearer has suggested the Scotland captain's performances this season, especially in the derby on Sunday, should earn him consideration for the award.

The legendary former Blackburn Rovers and Newcastle United striker, who won the inaugural Premier League Player of the Season prize in 1995, shared in a tweet: "Got to be a player of the season contender Andy Robertson?"

Aside from goals, Robertson has racked up 15 assists in all competitions so far this season, 10 of which have come in the league. Only Reds team-mates Mohamed Salah and Trent Alexander-Arnold have more than him in the top flight.

Last season, the Premier League Player of the Season award was handed to centre-back Ruben Dias as Manchester City cruised to their third league title in four years. Another City player, Kevin De Bruyne, won it the season before that.

The last Liverpool star to be handed the honour was Virgil van Dijk in 2019 while Salah's stunning 2017/18 campaign earned him the award the season prior. And with both City and the Reds battling it out for the title once again, there are certainly plenty of contenders for this season's prize.
