Alan Shearer launches scathing Man Utd verdict as Ralf Rangnick role branded "carnage"

Alan Shearer has taken aim at those making the big decisions at Manchester United insisting Ralf Rangnick's role underlines the "carnage".

The German arrived after Ole Gunnar Solskjaer was sacked and will remain in charge on an interim basis until the season ends.

He could, however, recommend to the hierarchy that he remains in his current role whilst it is also possible he takes a seat upstairs and passes on his recommendation as to who should replace him.

United have lurched from one short-term decision to another with Solskjaer's appointment back in 2019 by no means their original plan.

Yet they have persisted with the interim model, briefly handing Michael Carrick the reigns before hiring Rangnick.

Shearer has been left baffled by the major decisions taken at Old Trafford, where the club have gone without a trophy since 2017.

He told the Athletic : "It’s astonishing when you think about it. Manchester United, arguably the biggest club in the world, have an interim manager in place, one who has spent only two of the last 11 years in a coaching role.

"So they have a technical director as an interim, who is being assisted on the touchline by Darren Fletcher, who is a first-time technical director.

"Before that, it was Carrick for a couple of games. Before him, it was Ole Gunnar Solskjaer, who originally took over as caretaker. Interim technical caretakers.

"This is no way to run an organisation that has serious designs on success. This is not a criticism of Rangnick, but for him to arrive at the club as a stand-in until the end of the season, when he may or may not recommend he stays on longer, or then take on a consultancy role, is an absolute nonsense.

"It’s carnage! Where is the joined-up thinking? What is the decision-making structure? And how do players respond to this shifting authority?"

Mauricio Pochettino is among the favourites to take over in Manchester should Rangnick step aside.

The PSG boss has prior experience of the Premier League having enjoyed a largely successful spell at Tottenham despite not picking up any trophies.

The Argentine was linked with the Old Trafford hotseat back in December 2018 following Jose Mourinho's sacking.

United ultimately opted to go with Solskjaer after his impressive audition, but again find themselves looking for a new man in the dugout.

The haphazard decision making will not have helped the club's ambitions and they face the threat of missing out on the top four this season following more dropped points on Saturday against Southampton.
