Alan Shearer lauds Newcastle United for 5-1 West Ham Premier League rout

Newcastle United legend Alan Shearer has hailed his former side for their 5-1 demolition of West Ham after they took another step closer towards Champions League qualification.

A brace for both Callum Wilson and Joelinton as well as an Alexander Isak strike saw Eddie Howe's side flex their muscles in the nation's capital. Newcastle kept their spot in the top four as they stayed third on goal difference, with Manchester United also winning their top-flight game with Brentford 1-0 on Wednesday night.

Howe brought Wilson and Joelinton into the starting XI in place of Isak and Joe WIllock and the pair had repaid their manager's trust inside the opening 20 minutes with a goal each. Kurt Zouma's header from a corner would make it 2-1 just before the break, but some quick thinking from Jacob Murphy would set up the 31-year-old forward for his second of the game just 20 seconds after the restart.

Isak would also get on the scoresheet after coming on from the bench as he took advantage of a moment of madness from Lukasz Fabianski to lob the ball into an empty net from 25-yards-out. Joelinton then rounded off the scoring in the dying moments as he carried the ball into the area before placing a left-footed drive into the bottom corner.

As the travelling fans cheered on their team's performance, they were not alone as Shearer too joined in with the outpouring of praise. He took to social media to wax lyrical over the display from Howe's side, saying: "What a win and what a great away performance from the Toon."
