Alan Shearer hits the nail on the head with scathing Leeds United verdict after relegation

Alan Shearer has hit the nail on the head with his criticism of Leeds United's season after their relegation was confirmed with defeat against Tottenham Hotspur. The Whites were comfortably beaten 4-1 at Elland Road and in truth, a win would not have been enough to keep them in the Premier League given Everton and Leicester City both won their respective games.

The Whites have taken just twelve points against sides in the bottom-six this season, three wins, three draws and four defeats. It's the second worst record in the bottom-six with only Leicester City coming off worse.

Shearer was hugely critical of Leeds' defending against Tottenham while Gary Lineker said the game summed up their entire season.

Lineker told Match of The Day: "I think today epitomised Leeds' season in many ways and why they've gone."

"Absolutely," Shearer added. "Defensively, they've been an embarrassment really. Some of the defending today, you wouldn't see at under-10 level let alone in the Premier League.

"Yes, Tottenham have got some really good players particularly in forward positions, but when you're seeing errors like this [Harry Kane's unmarked for his opener], basic errors, players not sticking with men. Mistake after mistake after mistake.

"This has happened all season. 78 goals they've conceded which is pretty embarrassing and when you're conceding that many you're just not giving yourselves a chance at all.

"It's a lot," interjected Lineker. "You've got to score two or three goals a game."

"That's not going to happen," replied Shearer. "I mean goal scorer wise, that was a bit of an issue but it wasn't their biggest problem, this is their biggest issue - they've conceded far too many goals.

"It's a wonderful goal [from Lucas Moura] but he's running from the halfway line."
