Alan Shearer has questioned the explanation behind the time added on at the end of Liverpool’s dramatic win over Newcastle United.
Fabio Carvalho won the match for the Reds with virtually the last kick of the game after Roberto Firmino cancelled out Alexander Isak’s debut goal. However, Newcastle were left angered by the goal.
That is because the ball hit the back of the net more than two minutes after the five that were initially added on. Liverpool’s bench was euphoric, while Newcastle’s was apoplectic with rage at the amount of time being played.

The fourth official had shown a minimum of five minutes to be added for stoppage time. The precise moment of Liverpool’s winner came at 97.08, which has led to some criticism of too much time being added on.
And now according to Henry Winter of The Times, referee Andre Marriner totted up Newcastle's time-wasting and applied the right additional time.

“Where Newcastle can have complaints is if all refs don't now follow suit if/when other teams time-waste. Has to be consistency.”
But Shearer has now taken aim at the take, writing on Twitter: “So 5 mins extra for the 45 of the second half and 3 mins extra for the 5 mins of injury time.”
Speaking after the game, Jurgen Klopp described Liverpool’s 98th‑minute winner against Newcastle as “the perfect response” to the time-wasting of their visitors.
He said: “I enjoyed the win but we should have played more football. Newcastle did really well with how they put us under pressure.
“There was really a lot in the last 20-25 minutes when they start struggling with the intensity but we should have done better. We looked desperate before we were.
“Being 1-0 down is obviously not cool but that was the least of my problems at half-time. It was a difficult game to play because we didn’t play a lot.
“The game was just interrupted constantly for some reason and that doesn’t give you a chance to gain any momentum.
“In the end I was very happy when we got that last corner and what Mo [Salah] and Fabio made of it was absolutely outstanding. It was the perfect response to what had happened.”
