Alan Shearer heaps praise on Sean Longstaff as Newcastle United claim 1-0 win against Fulham

Former Newcastle United striker Alan Shearer has praised midfielder Sean Longstaff for his performance in the Magpies 1-0 win over Fulham on Sunday afternoon.

While Newcastle left it late against Fulham, they managed to break the deadlock in the dying embers through Alexander Isak, who headed home Callum Wilson's dinked cross to earn Eddie Howe's side all three points.

However, had former Newcastle striker Aleksandar Mitrovic not had a penalty disallowed for touching the ball twice, the game could have been a different story.

The win over Fulham sees Newcastle move back to third in the Premier League above Manchester United on goal difference.

It was an important win, one which the Magpies needed to shore up their place in the top four following their midweek cup win over Leicester City.

With Bruno Guimaraes having to go off at half time after sustaining an ankle injury, it meant Longstaff had to move into the deeper number six role against Fulham.

And it was Longstaff's lofted ball into the box for Wilson which led to Newcastle's winner, with the Geordie born midfielder receiving praise from Shearer on Twitter after the game.

Shearer tweeted: "It was always going to be a bit flat after the midweek, but they kept going and got a very important 3 points. Onwards and upwards" before adding further "BTW Sean Longstaff MOM today."
