Alan Shearer branded 'a pain in the a***' by Gareth Southgate's wife over fire footage

Alan Shearer is facing a ticking off from Gareth Southgate’s wife after filming wildfires near the England manager’s holiday home.

Football pundit Shearer recorded a video on Wednesday as terrifying fires swept through the Algarve in Portugal.

The former England striker says in the video: “This is unbelievable, I’ve never seen anything like this.

““Look at it... this is the roundabout near Gareth Southgate’s house.

“Someone needs to get here quick.”

Southgate’s wife Alison, 55, arrived at their holiday pad on Saturday after the week of wildfires.

Southgate is believed to be with her. Concerned about their home being mentioned in the video, she said of Shearer: “He’s a pain in the a*** and I’ll be having a word with him.”

She added on Saturday of the fires: “We weren’t here, we’ve only just got here. We’re good.”

The fires ravaged land so close to their home that their direct neighbours had to be evacuated on Wednesday.

Hours after they arrived, firefighters descended on a blaze only 100 yards from the back of their mansion.

Five engines lined the road leading to their house, with one stationed on the golf course behind it as firefighters put out a small blaze on land already scorched earlier in the week.

There are huge swathes of blackened land leading up to the Southgates’ pad.

One firefighter told the Mirror: “We have to be constantly aware as the fires can start again so quickly with this heat and wind.”

But Shearer’s video helped one English couple realise the severity of the blaze.

From their home in Surrey, the pair had watched via cameras in their Algarve house as the fires grew closer to their multi-million pound pad, which is next to where Newcastle legend Shearer filmed.

But they had not realised the severity until they saw his video circulating on Twitter.

“I saw Shearer’s video and I realised just how bad it was,” said the woman, speaking over her intercom from Surrey to the Mirror.

“They were my trees on fire. It was absolutely horrific. We should not have a house standing any more. I will be personally taking a gift to the firefighters when I arrive this week to assess the damage.”

Firefighters yesterday battled huge wildfires in Spain, Greece and France, where thousands have been evacuated.

Spain’s National weather agency issued high temperature warnings, with highs of 42C yesterday forecast in some northern areas.
