Alan Shearer blasts Liverpool defensive display as 'really good' Leeds United win at Anfield

Alan Shearer has torn into Liverpool's defensive display after admitting he though they'd turned a corner. The Match of The Day pundit was full of praise for Leeds United's attacking intent, which saw them pick up their first win in eight games.

The result alleviates any immediate pressure on Jesse Marsch, lifting the Whites out of the relegation zone. However, Leeds will host Bournemouth at Elland Road next weekend knowing defeat could see them drop back into the bottom three.

The win at Liverpool came with nobody expecting a result, but now the Whites must build on that ahead of the winter break.

Shearer told Match of The Day: "Well I thought it was going to kick start their season after their performance against Manchester City. We saw the energy back, but they were fortunate to beat West Ham, West Ham missed a penalty. Then they go to Forest last week, poor result.

"Then of course this result here. Defensively they've been so poor, that means everyone across the back. There's a lack of protection.

"This is just a crazy error from Gomez [Leeds' opening goal], he doesn't even look. Not once does he look where his goalkeeper is, plays a blind pass and you just can't do that at all. Rodrigo is quick to react and he gets a simple tap in.

"Basic error, you shouldn't do that at all. This is more worrying, from a free-kick, one long ball, [Kristensen] take a touch on the ball, whip it in, Aaronson comes from nowhere and that again should be in the back of the net.

"Too many chances, too easy to get through, a lack of protection. Look at the numbers that Leeds are trying to get forward - 4 v 2 - Harrison this time, again this should be in the back of the net and a decent save from Alisson.

"Really good play from Leeds, but one vs one at the back after an attack from Liverpool. They're so slow with the turnover of possession Liverpool.

"One pass and it was 3 v 2 for Leeds. I know Liverpool created chances but so are Leeds. Aaronson with a good ball in to Summerville, a better touch there - it's a terrible touch there from Bamford, that should be a touch and an effort at goal, a better touch and they're in again.

"The winning goal, poor clearance, three of them on Gnonto there, there's nothing, no pressure on the ball and you've got to stop the cross. It's far too easy from Van Dijk he stands off him [Bamford] doesn't close him down and you've got to get closer to him.

"What a moment for Summerville. What a finish and what a performance. What a result for Leeds United, but Liverpool - I said it before the season - they don't half look a yard slow."
