Alan Shearer and Micah Richards deliver honest verdict on Roman Abramovich's Chelsea statement

Alan Shearer has had his say on Roman Abramovich's Chelsea announcement.

Abramovich confirmed that he will sell the west London club on Wednesday evening following considerable pressure in the wake of Russia's invasion of Ukraine.

The Russian billionaire bought the club back in 2003 and his statement claimed that he has made an “incredibly difficult decision” to sell, stating that it was in the best interest of the club.

He also said that he will not be seeking any repayment loans he has given the club, which are in excess of £1.5billion, saying that the net proceeds from the sale will be donated to a charitable foundation created to benefit victims of the war in Ukraine.

Now, all-time Premier League top goalscorer Shearer has highlighted how monumental this is for the reigning champions of Europe

Speaking on BBC, Shearer said: "Huge moment for Chelsea Football Club.

"He has brought massive success over his 20 years, but it is not as simple as selling the football club as we know it can take months, even years to sell a football club.

"But I still think, more importantly, there is still no condemnation from Roman or the club about what is happening in Ukraine."

Former Manchester City defender Micah Richards weighed in on the situation, saying: "It is a better statement than Saturday.

"I was left scratching my head when that statement came out. Today there is a lot more clarity.

"I think Roman has done the right thing but it’s so sad that we’re having to talk about this on a football night with all the scenes that we have seen over the past couple of days, it’s just heartbreaking.

"The sooner it can happen, the better."
