Alan Shearer agrees with David Moyes about Declan Rice after West Ham display in Newcastle draw

Former England captain Alan Shearer has agreed with West Ham United manager David Moyes over Declan Rice’s performance against Newcastle United.

The Hammers’ skipper was one of a number of players to impress for Moyes’ side on Tyneside as West Ham came from a goal behind on Saturday evening to earn a 1-1 draw thanks to Lucas Paqueta’s second goal in his last five starts in all competitions.

Many of the plaudits went to Moroccan international centre-back Nayef Aguerd for his display, including ex-England and Arsenal striker Ian Wright.

Another player who deserves plenty of credit is Rice, who played a key role next to Paqueta in the heat of midfield against the Magpies.

Speaking after the game, Shearer, whose career includes scoring 260 Premier League goals, the highest in the competition’s history, was very complimentary of Rice.

“I thought Declan Rice was superb today, very good,” Shearer told BBC’s Match of the Day.

Those thoughts were echoed by Rice’s manager Moyes, who waxed lyrical about the quality Rice showed at St James’ Park.

The Scottish manager went on to say that should Rice leave the club, it would smash the current British transfer record of almost £107million that Chelsea spent on Enzo Fernandez from Benfica on transfer deadline day.

“I don’t know if I need to say the words, I think you’d maybe say the words if you watched it the way I saw it,” said Moyes .

“I thought he was a top player in the first-half, really was. Showed so many things and you know it’s interesting, undoubtedly, Declan is going to be a top player and undoubtedly he’ll be a British transfer record if he ever leaves West Ham, and more.
