Former radio broadcaster Alan Jones will face court for the first time on charges of indecently assaulting or sexually touching nine alleged victims.
The 2GB personality, 83, will appear before Downing Centre Local Court and NSW Chief Magistrate, Judge Michael Allen, on Wednesday morning.
Jones was initially facing 26 charges from incidents which allegedly took place between June 2001 and December 2019 in multiple locations across Sydney and Melbourne. According to Sky News, the broadcaster has been charged with an additional eight new indecent assault charges.
This means Jones has been hit with a total of 34 charges, including 19 counts of assault with an act of indecency, 11 counts of aggravated indecent assault, two counts of sexually touching another person without consent and two counts of common assault.
Jones was arrested from his luxury Circular Quay apartment on November 18 after police raided his property. The public figure was arrested and quickly granted bail by police. However, his bail conditions reportedly included restrictions on his travel and contact with the alleged victims.
Police began looking into Jones’ alleged crimes after a feature by The Age and The Sydney Morning Herald which alleged that Jones had used his position of power to assault and prey on young men. A specialised unit, Strike Force Bonnefin, was created to investigate Jones’ alleged crimes.
Jones’ lawyer Chris Murphy says that the former broadcaster “denies any misconduct” and that he will defend the charges.
“Allegations have been made. Nothing has been tested, nothing has been proven. He is presumed innocent,” Murphy said.
