Alan Jones has spoken out publicly after entering a not-guilty plea to 34 indecent assault charges, labelling the allegations as “either baseless or distort the truth”.
The 83-year-old appeared at Downing Centre Local Court on Wednesday morning, where his solicitor Bryan Wrench declared that the former 2GB broadcaster would be pleading not guilty to the charges. Shortly after, Jones addressed the media scrum waiting for him with a prepared statement.
“Firstly, let me say this: I am certainly not guilty and I will be presenting my account to a jury, as you heard this morning,” he told the crowd.
“I will not be engaging in a running commentary in the media, but I want you to understand this: these allegations are either baseless or distort[ing] the truth.”
Jones claimed that he was given “no opportunity by police to answer these allegations”.
“I have never indecently assaulted these people,” Jones continued.
“The law assumes that I’m not guilty, and I am not guilty. That’s all I can say at the moment, but I am emphatic that I will be defending every charge before a jury in due course.”
Jones’ statement comes a month after he was arrested from his apartment in Circular Quay on November 18 following a raid by Strike Force Bonnefin — a specialist police investigation unit created to investigate Jones’ alleged crimes after a report by The Age and The Sydney Morning Herald alleged Jones had used his position of power to assault and prey on young men.
Jones is currently facing 34 charges, including 19 counts of assault with an act of indecency, 11 counts of aggravated indecent assault, two counts of sexually touching another person without consent and two counts of common assault. Police allege these crimes took place between June 2001 and December 2019.
