Letham legend Alan Ferguson has hung up his stopwatch for the final time.
‘Fergie’ has been a stalwart of the club for more than 30 years and became their most successful manager ever.
He retires from that position having won 11 amateur league titles, 20+ cups and, the one that probably means most to him, the North of Tay Cup in 2017.
A key personality at Seven Acres, Fergie proudly took charge of his final game on Saturday before stepping down.
He is, however, remaining at the club and will take on the role of Letham Junior Football Club.
Letham stepped up to the Junior ranks for this season and have been plying their trade in the Midlands League.
“I am very proud of what we have achieved this year and with a wee bit of luck we would’ve been in the top half of the league,” Fergie said. “Everyone knuckle down next season and get this great club where it should be.”
Taking on the position of manager at Letham is Sean Whitworth, who steps up from assistant this season.
First, he made sure to pay tribute to the work Fergie has done with the club over a number of years.
“Fergie has done a remarkable job to have had the longevity in the role that he has,” Sean said.
“His record of winning leagues and cup competitions throughout his time speaks for itself.
“He has been very successful as a manager but most of all he is an all-round good man and he deserves all the plaudits that he gets.
“It’s great to have him sticking around. Letham is in his blood and it’s only right that the club has honoured him by making him the president of the junior club.
“I’m sure he will be willing to lend an ear as a sounding board for any advice to me, which will prove invaluable as I move into the manager role.”
It goes without saying that Sean was thrilled to be named manager of a club where he sees great potential.
He explained to the PA: “I’m really proud and delighted to have been offered the role.
“It will be a challenge but the hard work in preparation for next season is already well under way.
“As a club, we are in a good position and having the support of the committee is a great thing to have.”
Letham finished their debut Midlands League campaign in 15th spot, ahead of Scone Thistle, Coupar Angus, Forfar United and Dundee St James.
“On the park, we have proved on several occasions throughout our first season that we are worthy of our place in the junior ranks and it’s now down to us to work together and continue to push us onwards and up the league table,” Sean said.
“We’ll take our well earned rest and come back in a few weeks for pre-season determined to push on further next season.”
