Alan Carr recalls blunder at Paul O'Grady's funeral that late star 'would have loved'

Alan Carr has recalled how a hilarious blunder during Paul O'Grady's funeral led to some chuckles from mourners paying their respects to the late star.

The comedian, 46, joined the likes of Rolling Stone Ronnie Wood, comedian Jo Brand and presenter Gaby Roslin back in April, when Paul was laid to rest following the TV legend's unexpected death at the age of 67 on March 28.

A celebration of Paul's life took place as the star was laid to rest at St Rumwold's Church in Bannington, Kent, with local pupils and teacher taking to the streets to share sweet tributes to Paul.

While Paul's send-off was an emotional affair for the animal lover's friends and family, Alan has now revealed how the service for his late friend still managed to provide some unintential comical moments.

Speaking with Kathy Burke, Alan recalled how he and fellow mourners were "in bits" throughout the funeral but ended up "killing ourselves laughing" at one point, thanks to a very awkward musical performance and a comment from the vicar.

Alan explained to Kathy, who was also friends with Paul, how although he enjoyed Christmas parties with Paul over the years, he didn't want to appear like he was "ambulance chasing" when paying tribute to the late TV star.

He went on to ponder how he was pals with Paul but wasn't one of his "proper best friends", like Julian Clary.

"[Julian] did the eulogy at the funeral and of course, we're all in bits and crying, [but before Julian's eulogy] the man comes on and plays the organ," Alan recalled to Kathy on the Where There's A Will, There's A Wake podcast.

"He's proper like Les Dawson, all out of tune, and we're killing ourselves laughing - not meant to be- then Julian gets up to do the eulogy.

"[But before that] this vicar comes out - honestly, he must not know Julian's work - and says 'can I just apologise - the organ needed pumping'," Alan continued, as Kathy burst into laughter.

"Julian just looked round and looked at him and said 'thanks for clearing that up. What a gift for Julian," Alan added, giggling himself when remembering the moment.

"That's beautiful," Kathy declared, with Alan agreeing their late friend "would have loved" it.

Paul's husband Andre Portasio announced the star's 'unexpected but peaceful death' earlier this year, with tributes from Paul's famous friends and fans flooding in throughout the day as the country remembered the TV icon.

"It is with great sadness that I inform you that Paul has passed away unexpectedly but peacefully yesterday evening," Andre announced on March 28.

"We ask, at this difficult time, that whilst you celebrate his life you also respect our privacy as we come to terms with this loss.

"He will be greatly missed by his loved ones, friends, family, animals and all those who enjoyed his humour, wit and compassion.

"I know that he would want me to thank you for all the love you have shown him over the years."

The Lily Savage star's death sparked a wave of donations for his beloved animal centre - with Battersea Dogs & Cats Home saying they were "overwhelmed and touched" by the reaction of the public after Paul's death.
