Alabama's unceremonious exit in the Sweet 16 Friday evening at the hands of San Diego State drew comment throughout the college basketball world, as the Crimson Tide's scandal-marred 2023 season came to an end.
However, Alabama forward Brandon Miller’s performance drew particular scrutiny.
The Crimson Tide superstar made just eight of his 41 field goal attempts in Alabama's three tournament games against Texas A&M-Corpus Christi, Maryland and the Aztecs. According to CBS Sports research—cited in a tweet by CBS Sports’s Matt Norlander—he is the only player in at least the last 64 seasons to record a shooting percentage that low on that many attempts.
Miller is considered the top talent in the college game, and a potential top-two pick in June's NBA draft.
He’s come under increased scrutiny in recent weeks, after being connected to a deadly shooting in Tuscaloosa. According to police testimony, Miller allegedly provided former teammate Darius Miles with the gun used to kill Jamea Harris on Jan. 15—a tragedy for which Miles now faces a capital murder charge. Miller was not charged for his role in the incident, and his attorney Jim Standridge says Miller had no prior knowledge of the altercation that led up to the shooting, and that he never touched the gun and wasn’t involved in giving it to Michael Davis, the alleged shooter.
