An Akron, Ohio, Police Department school resource officer has been asked not to return to Firestone Community Learning Center following an incident captured on surveillance video. The video showed the officer punching a student in the head multiple times during morning metal detector procedures on October 16.
According to Akron Public Schools, the student was instructed to go through the metal detector after it indicated a red light and beeped. The officer, concerned about school safety, wanted to ensure the student didn't have any weapons. When the student resisted being detained by officers, a struggle ensued, leading to the officer throwing three punches at the student's head before handcuffing him.
Superintendent Michael Robinson reviewed the footage and deemed the officer's actions unacceptable. While acknowledging the importance of law enforcement partnerships and the role of School Resource Officers (SROs) in student safety, Robinson emphasized the need for accountability in such situations.
The school district has formally requested the permanent removal of the SRO involved. The officer is currently on administrative leave, and the Akron police department is conducting an internal review of the use of force.
APS prioritizes the safety and well-being of its students and staff, highlighting the significance of maintaining trust and relationships within the community. The incident serves as a reminder of the delicate balance between ensuring safety and upholding accountability in educational environments.
