Ajax are interested in appointing Graham Potter as the former Chelsea manager considers a return to coaching after more than a year on the sidelines.

Potter, who is also on a list of potential replacements for Erik ten Hag at Manchester United, has been recharging his batteries since a challenging seven-month spell at Chelsea last season. The former Brighton manager has been linked with plenty of jobs and is determined not to be rushed into taking the wrong one.

Ajax, who are looking for someone to replace their interim head coach, John van ’t Schip, at the end of the season, could appeal to Potter. They are the biggest club in the Netherlands and, although they have had problems on and off the pitch this season, the rich history will give them hope of making an eye-catching appointment.

Part of the appeal for Potter could be the challenge of reviving Ajax. They are fifth in the Eredivisie and in danger of missing out on European qualification. Van ’t Schip took over after the sacking of Maurice Steijn last October.

Working in a foreign league would not be an issue for Potter. He took a risk in 2011 when he moved to Sweden to take over Östersund, who were in the fourth division. Potter lifted Östersund into the top flight and Europe before leaving for Swansea in 2018.

He has a reputation as being calm and intelligent and has been praised for innovative tactics. Potter revolutionised Brighton’s style after joining in 2019 and his work there caught the eye of Chelsea after they fired Thomas Tuchel at the start of last season. However, Potter’s stay at Stamford Bridge did not go to plan and he was sacked at the start of April 2023.

There is a recognition within football circles that the chaotic nature of life under Chelsea’s new owners made it difficult for Potter to succeed. He will tread carefully before making his next move. Joining Ajax has not been ruled out but the situation is not at an advanced stage.

It is understood United are in a holding pattern with Ten Hag and have not decided whether to keep him beyond this season.
