Ajax manager 'charmed' following 'extensive' phone call with Rangers' Calvin Bassey

Ajax manager 'charmed' following 'extensive' phone call with Rangers' Calvin Bassey

RANGERS defender Calvin Bassey has spoken 'extensively' with Ajax head coach Alfred Schreuder and left him 'charmed', according to reports.

The Nigeria internationalist enjoyed a superb campaign last season as Giovanni van Bronckhorst's side reached the Europa League final, leading to rampant speculation over the versatile defender's future.

Dutch giants Ajax are said to be lining up Bassey as a replacement for centre-half Lisandro Martinez, who is on the brink of a move to Manchester United, and reports in the Netherlands claim Schreuder has already spoken with the 22-year-old.

De Telegraaf report that the Ajax boss is 'very charmed' with the Rangers defender, adding that the pair have 'already spoken extensively by telephone'.

The report adds that the Dutch champions value the player at around €20million but Ibrox chiefs are holding out for €25million, due to apparent interest from English Premier League outfit Brighton.

Bassey arrived in Glasgow from Leicester City on a free transfer in the summer of 2020 and is contracted to the Govan club for another two years.
