Ajax fans let off fireworks and pyros in George Square ahead of Rangers clash

Ajax fans have lit fireworks and pyrotechnics at George Square ahead of tonight's Champions League match with Rangers.

The Dutch giants are known for having some of Europe's most passionate fans and thousands have travelled with them to see their side's final Group A game in the continent's premier club competition. Both sides are already out but Ajax are looking to fully seal a place in the Europa League after Christmas, while Rangers need a miracle win of five goals to proceed into that arena.

Various video clips on social media show fans of the away club at Ibrox tonight lighting pyrotechnics while fireworks are also used in one of Glasgow's busiest areas.

Dutch fans had announced they were planning to march from George Square to Ibrox ahead of the 8pm kick-off later tonight, in what will be the final European match in Glasgow this season.

A familiar face will return to Govan as Calvin Bassey prepares to face his former club. Rangers sold him to Ajax in the summer for a club-record fee.

He said: “The Champions League is a step up from the Europa League. You see the teams you are facing in the Champions League and you can see their quality.

“They have dangerous players, physically they are bigger and stronger as well. Everyone knows the history of Ajax and it is a step up for me. We have a lot of quality in the team."

Police Scotland have been contacted by Glasgow Live for comment.
