An airport that straddles the United States and Canada border will permanently close Friday due to low foot traffic.
The Piney-Pinecreek Border Airport that sits near Roseau, Minnesota, and Piney, Manitoba, will permanently close on Friday, said the Minnesota Department of Transportation (MnDOT).
Opened in 1953 with a grass runway, a paved strip for airplanes was added to the airport in 1978 making it the only airport out of six with a paved runway, reported the Associated Press.
Despite its unique location, the Minnesota Department of Transportation said low usage and a mounting maintenance cost that includes the runway, rendered the 70-year-old airport unprofitable.
The international agreement between MnDOT and the municipality of Piney, Manitoba that allows the Piney-Pinecreek Border Airport to operate expires December 26 and will not be renewed.
Locals can choose from using four other surrounding airports once the closure goes into effect.
