Airport Hacks For Savvy Travellers

irports are a hive of activity, especially during peak travel periods. And while some things, like flight delays and lost luggage are beyond our control, planning ahead can make a huge difference to your airport experience. Put these steps in place to streamline your next trip so you’ll have more time to relax and focus on what matters (hello, guest lounge!).

Simplify Your Parking

Step one: plan your airport parking in advance. If you’re heading in or out of Melbourne,  Melbourne Airport’s Terminal Parking is conveniently located just a few minutes’ walk from Terminals 1, 2, 3 and 4, meaning you’ll be at the check-in counter in no time.

Book online for the best rates and enjoy the first 15 minutes of free parking for a more efficient experience. No more worrying about cancelled ride shares or queuing at payment machines – everything is sorted before you arrive. Plus, here’s a handy tip: you’ll get a one-hour grace period before and after your reserved time, which actually gives you up to two extra hours of parking if you experience delays.

Less time in line and more time in the lounge, that’s the aim of the airport game.

Arrive Early to Avoid the Rush

Airports can be unpredictable, so don’t risk missing your flight by arriving at the last minute. Giving yourself that extra cushion of time means you can go through security checks, drop off your baggage and handle other formalities at a comfortable pace. Plus, it allows for unexpected delays like traffic or longer-than-usual security lines without throwing off your plans.

Check Flight Statuses Before You Go

Before heading out to the airport, it’s always a good idea to check your flight status. Many airlines have apps that send real-time updates about whether your flight is on time, delayed or cancelled.

Knowing if there are any changes ahead of time allows you to you adjust your schedule accordingly. If your flight is delayed, you might have time for an extra coffee at home or be able to run some last-minute errands. If it’s cancelled, you can quickly make alternate arrangements without feeling rushed.

Save Time With Online Check-In

These days airlines offer online check-in, which makes it easier to sort out your seat and boarding pass well before reaching the airport. It’s a real time-saver, especially if you’re travelling light with just hand luggage. You can bypass the check-in counter entirely and head straight to security.

Pack Smart

Packing strategically is another way to make your airport visit smoother. Stick to the essentials for your trip and avoid overpacking, which can add unnecessary weight and slow you down during check-in or security. Make sure your carry-on meets the airline’s size and weight guidelines to prevent any surprises at the gate.

Also be sure to keep your travel documents, such as passports and boarding passes, in an easy-to-reach spot. That way, you’re not scrambling to find them when going through security or boarding.

Plan for Airport Amenities

Many airports offer a range of amenities to make your visit more comfortable, from lounges to charging stations. If you have extra time, why not
