FORT WALTON BEACH, Fla. (AP) — U.S. Air Force airman Roger Fortson, a 23-year-old from Atlanta, was tragically shot dead by a sheriff's deputy in Florida just two days after calling home to inquire about his 10-year-old sister's birthday wishes. Described as a caring individual who was dedicated to his family's well-being, Fortson's mother, Chantemekki Fortson, expressed how he strived to provide for her, his siblings, and offer support in various aspects of their lives.

Fortson's untimely death occurred when an Okaloosa County sheriff’s deputy responded to a disturbance call at the apartment complex where Fortson resided. While authorities claim the deputy acted in self-defense, civil rights attorney Ben Crump, representing the Fortson family, has contested the shooting as unjustified, alleging that the deputy mistakenly targeted the wrong apartment.

Having joined the Air Force in 2019 after graduating from a predominantly Black high school in DeKalb County, Fortson fulfilled his dream of serving in the military. Rising to the rank of senior airman and stationed at Hurlburt Field near Fort Walton Beach, Fortson was recognized for his exceptional service, earning an Air Medal with a combat device for his valor and achievements during missions aboard the AC-130J gunship.

Described as a role model for his younger brother and a pillar of support for his family, Fortson's dedication extended beyond his military duties. Despite facing challenges, including injuries sustained while loading a plane, Fortson persevered, driven by his desire to provide a better life for his loved ones. His mother fondly recalled instances where Fortson's selflessness and determination shone through, emphasizing his unwavering commitment to his family's well-being.

As investigations into the circumstances surrounding Fortson's death continue, his family and community mourn the loss of a beloved son, brother, and serviceman. Remembered for his kindness, resilience, and unwavering devotion to his family, Roger Fortson's legacy serves as a testament to the impact of his selfless actions and enduring spirit.
