Airlines axe more flights during summer owing to staff shortages and airport issues

German national airline Lufthansa and its low-cost subsidiary Eurowings have been forced to cancel around 1,000 flights next month, because of disruption affecting both carriers. It has been confirmed that Lufthansa planned to axe 900 domestic and European services from hubs at Frankfurt and Munich in July.

The airline said: “After a good two years of the pandemic, Lufthansa group airlines report high demand for air travel this summer. At present, however, the infrastructure has not yet been fully restored. The entire aviation industry, especially in Europe, is currently suffering from bottlenecks and staff shortages.

"This affects airports, ground handling services, air traffic control, and also airlines.”

Subsidiary Eurowings has also removed “several hundred flights" from its July programme. The airline group's statement added: “Lufthansa and Eurowings have implemented numerous measures to ensure the most outstanding possible stability of the flight schedule and thus offer their customers the best possible planning security.

"However, it is foreseeable that the flight schedules will not be able to be flown as hoped due to the bottlenecks.”

It is the latest blow for passengers with thousands of flights axed in recent months because of staff shortages and other issues in the aftermath of the pandemic.

British Airways, easyJet and TUI have all been forced to ditch departures from UK and international airports with travellers also complaining of lengthy delays and disruption at airports.
