Airline staff reveal cheap flight hacks including the best time to book for deals

When it comes to finding cheap flights, there are plenty of travel tips out there to help you unearth the best deals and bargain fares.

(In fact, we've even done some of the leg work for you and searched out some of the top flight deals right now ).

Being flexible with your dates of travel will always help, but sometimes it's not quite possible.

Luckily, airline staff are on hand to share some of their secrets for bagging the best flight offers and discounts.

The team at budget airline Wizz Air have shared some of their simple hacks for nabbing travel bargains - and they're not Wizz Air specific either.

Check out their top tips below.

1. Plan ahead

You may have heard that waiting until the last minute to book a flight can be a handy money-saving trick, but that's not always the case. In fact, the opposite can be true; the closer it gets to take off, the more a price could increase especially if the flight already has a lot of bookings. Want to put the odds in your favour? Booking up to eight weeks in advance is most likely to be the cheapest time to book.

2. Avoid peak times

Flying on an array of days could save you money, but if you can't be flexible with your travel dates, that doesn't mean you need to splash the cash. For example, opting for night flights can be cheaper than daytime. It's also worth looking at your departure airport - if there's an alternative nearby compare the prices, as it may be that simply changing your departure point means cheaper fares.

3. Three's a crowd

Travelling in a big group? Airlines' algorithms often try to group you all together when you're searching for flights, which could mean you end up paying more for certain seats. Booking your seats separately may be time consuming, but if you're all on a budget then it could be worth the extra effort.

4. Consider one-way fares

Return fares often are the most cost-effective, but it's still worth having a look at whether booking your two flights separately could mean you save some extra cash.

5. Sign up to newsletters

Airline often share their latest deals, discounts and other bargains on social media platforms, or exclusively to their newsletter subscribers. If you know you're going to be planning a holiday it's worth signing up to these so you can get a head's up for any upcoming savings. (The Mirror's travel newsletter could be a great place to start!).
