Airline apologises after 'nightmare' wait at Manchester Airport baggage reclaim as luggage piles up

An airline has apologised after passengers experienced a 'nightmare' wait for luggage at Manchester Airport. Amy Platt, 36, was travelling home after a dream trip for her wedding and honeymoon.

After a long flight she and her husband had to wait two hours until their baggage finally arrived. Virgin Atlantic apologised to customers affected by the delays, which are also said to have affected other airlines.

Amy shared footage of the scene at baggage reclaim in Terminal two yesterday morning. She said that as she waited for her luggage to arrive, baggage from another flight began to pass down the conveyor belt from a flight on which passengers had not yet disembarked.

Amy, from Macclesfield, who married in Las Vegas before honeymooning in Cancun, had flown back to via a connecting flight from Atlanta, Georgia, arriving back in Manchester at 6.10am. She said: "We had been travelling for a good 15 hours.

"The last thing you want to do is be stood there for two hours waiting for your luggage at Manchester Airport, it was completely abysmal really. We kept mithering the baggage handlers, about 20 of us were left with no bags.

"There was about 250 people on our flight, about 200 had come off, they had got most of the bags off. We didn't understand why, we kept asking the handling agents what was going on.

"These people had not even got off the plane yet and they were shipping their bags off. One of their bags must have got stuck and you can see this massive pile up.

"There was a lady there, she had a young boy who was about four years old, their stroller had been left on the plane and she had to carry the boy for two hours. Another lady was getting a taxi up to York, and her taxi was outside on a meter.

"It was just a nightmare really for people." A Virgin Atlantic spokesperson said: "Along with other airlines, some of our customers experienced increased wait times for the delivery of their bags at Manchester Airport yesterday (20th May.)

"We’d like to apologise to our customers for the issue and any inconvenience caused." They said customers were kept informed of the delays at baggage reclaim.

Manchester Airport have been approached for comment.
