Airdrieonians issue lifetime ban after racist abuse incident

Airdrieonians have handed out a lifetime ban punishment after an East Kilbride player was subject to racist abuse at the weekend.

Joao Balde, a midfielder for the Lowland League club, played as Mick Kennedy's side progressed to the last eight of the Challenge Cup after a penalty shootout win.

Earlier today, East Kilbride made it known that the Portuguese player had been subjected to the abuse.

Now, Championship strugglers Airdrie have confirmed that a lifetime ban has been dished out to the person responsible, with Police Scotland now in charge of the situation.

A club statement reads: "The club are aware of an incident which took place following Saturday’s match against East Kilbride.

"The perpetrator of the incident, in which an East Kilbride player was subjected to racial abuse, has been identified and issued with a lifetime ban.

"Airdrieonians Football Club operates a zero-tolerance policy towards racism. All information gathered and witness statements have been delivered to Police Scotland who will now take control of this matter."

An East Kilbride spokesperson said: "East Kilbride Football Club is aware of an incident involving our player, Joao Balde, that occurred during Saturday's match.

"We are currently in dialogue with Airdrie Football Club, who have initiated an investigation into the matter. We trust that Airdrie will address this situation appropriately and thoroughly.

"Our thoughts remain with Joao, who was exceptional on Saturday."

Police Scotland has been contacted for comment.
