Airdrieonians confirm Rhys McCabe as player-manager to replace Ian Murray

Airdrieonians confirm Rhys McCabe as player-manager to replace Ian Murray

RHYS McCabe has been appointed as the new player-manager of Airdrieonians.

The 29-year-old, who started his career at Rangers, takes over the reins at the League One club from Ian Murray, who recently left for Raith Rovers.

McCabe played for several other high-profile clubs in his career, including Sheffield Wednesday and Portsmouth.

He takes on his first role in management before his 30th birthday though, but will continue to play his part on the pitch.

Diamonds club captain Callum Fordyce has been appointed as player-assistant.

McCabe told airdriefc.com: “It’s good to get signed up and get things over the line as quick as we have, so I’m excited, raring to go and looking forward to getting onto the pitch.”

“I’ve always made it clear that towards the latter stages of my career it was an avenue I’d like to go down. Obviously the opportunity has come up to dive straight in, so it’s one that I’m excited about."
