Airdrie striker Callum Smith is ready to fire his side up League One

Callum Smith hopes to go on a scoring run that fires Airdrie up the League One table, starting at Falkirk on Saturday.

The 23-year-old bagged his fifth goal of the season in the 6-2 Scottish Cup third round defeat at Dundee last weekend, and hopes that’s the first of many.

That was the former Hamilton and Arbroath star’s first in seven games, since netting in a 3-3 draw at home to Queen of the South in October, and says it was a boost, regardless of the result.

Smith’s 66th-minute strike meant Airdrie were drawing 2-2 going into extra-time at Dens Park, but defender Cammy Ballantyne picked up two bookings inside stoppage time to leave the Diamonds up against it.

Dundee then scored four more times, with Derick Osei’s double added to by Finlay Robertson and Luke McCowan to compound a miserable afternoon.

But Smith hopes that has sparked a run for himself, and Airdrie’s performance can give them a boost.

He said: “I was dying to get that goal back, that’s been a few weeks now that I’ve not scored, so it was good to get that goal and hopefully there’s more to come.

“I hope to go on a wee run. I scored a few at the start of the season and I thought I was going to get that run going, but it kind of came to a wee stop and we started not playing as well.

“But if we keep doing well and I keep scoring goals, that’s the main objective.

“We said before the Dundee game that we wanted to give it our all and show that we can play teams at that level.

“I think we gave a good account of ourselves.

“Overall, I think we were probably the better team – even though they had spells of the ball, we did more with it.

“We can be proud of ourselves.

“We did go through a wee spell where we were struggling to get results, but I think that was four unbeaten up until the weekend there, and in the 90 minutes it was 2-2.

“We take confidence from that, and we’re looking to keep that unbeaten run going.”

Smith expects a tough game from John McGlynn’s Bairns, but hopes noisy travelling fans can boost them at Falkirk.

He said: “It’s another big game at Falkirk away. We had a good record there last season, so we’re hoping to continue that.

“We know it’s going to be a hard game, they’ve been good this season, but so have we, and we’re really looking forward to it.”
