Airdrie star targets Kelty Hearts win to get back in League One promotion race

Airdrie star Euan Deveney has urged his side to beat Kelty Hearts and pull themselves closer to the League One promotion pack.

The 20-year-old hopes the Diamonds can build on their recent form, keep momentum going and push their way back up the table.

Airdrie fought back to draw 1-1 with Peterhead last weekend after back-to-back wins over Clyde and Montrose - but that followed a poor run of form that pitched them down the table.

Deveney and his team-mates welcome new boys Kelty Hearts to New Broomfield tomorrow, and he hopes another win can propel them further towards the promotion places.

But Airdrie are also looking for revenge after losing 1-0 at Kelty back in October.

He told Airdrie's website: "We just want to keep the momentum going as a team.

"That’s three unbeaten so we want to make it four and five and just push up that table.

“I think Kelty away was a tough game. It’s a tough place to go, it’s a tight pitch.

“It’s a completely different setting here - it’s a big pitch and we’re at home. They’re a tough opponent, but we owe them one - there’s no question about that.

“When you look where we are in the table, we need to win - there’s no getting away from that, but we’re at home again and though we’d have liked to get three points on Saturday, it’s on to the next.”

Deveney is pleased to be back in the Airdrie first-team after a spell on the side-lines, and hopes to keep impressing.

He was disappointed only to draw with Peterhead - with Lewis Jamieson's 88th-minute strike levelling Jason Brown's header in 33 minutes - but felt he played well.

He said: "It’s good to be back in the team after a short spell on the bench. I just want to help the team and play well, so I’m happy with myself.

“I don’t think anybody likes being on the bench, but at the same time it’s not up to myself - I can’t choose if I play or I don’t play, but I’m always going to be a team player.

“It was disappointing to draw at the weekend. I felt we should have won the game, we had ample opportunity, especially in the second half.

“On a personal note I thought I did okay, I can play better as I’ve shown in the weeks before that - I enjoyed Montrose at home, I enjoyed Clyde away… it’s always nice to play against a former club."

Airdrie report that goalkeeper Josh Rae and midfielder Adam Frizzell are ahead of schedule in their race for fitness, while Gabby McGill will undergo late checks to see if he can be involved, and striker Cammy Smith has shaken off a knee knock sustained last weekend.
