Airdrie star hails 'exceptional' teammates as hidden Diamonds talent explained amid outstanding unbeaten run

Airdrie are great to look at with the ball on the deck - but it's their hard graft off it which has them on a staggering unbeaten run according to Calum Gallagher.

The Diamonds are looking to make it 17 League One games unbeaten in their pursuit of title glory this weekend when they meet third-placed Montrose.

Ian Murray's side are second and three points off leaders Cove Rangers, who are on an undefeated run themselves, stretching across 22 games.

Gallagher is on a high after a brace in last week's 2-0 win at East Fife, where Airdrie turned in a professional display to earn three points.

Players like Dylan Easton, Rhys McCabe and Callum Smith have earned the New Broomhill side plenty of plaudits for their eye-catching technical work, but the former Rangers striker reckons the team's running power is key.

He explained: "It's credit to the guys and to the gaffer. He's built a team that is exceptional on the ball but perhaps doesn't get as much credit off the ball.

"It's because they look so good on the ball. They pass the eye test but they do so much running and we see that in the data.

"It provides a platform that even when we aren't at our prettiest or free-flowing best, we can still get results.

"That's the sign of a really competitive team that should be pushing for the title."

The three-point gap Cove have on Airdrie could have been one, had it not been for Fraser Fyvie's stoppage-time screamer in a 1-1 draw at New Broomhill last month.

Gallagher says it was tough to take but there was positives to be found amid the late pain.

He added: "The Cove game was heartbreaking. But we took a couple of days to recover and looked at the game. We played exceptionally in the first half and Cove didn't really have an answer for us.

"A moment of magic saved them from getting beat. We took a lot of confidence from that as we believe in what we are building here."
