Airdrie skipper Callum Fordyce hails Diamonds' bravery for putting training moves into practice in win over Falkirk

Airdrie skipper Callum Fordyce hailed his side for having the bravery to put their training ground moves into practice in their win over Falkirk.

Goals from Fordyce, Scott McGill and Calum Gallagher proved the difference against the Bairns, who netted through Brad McKay and Anton Dowds.

The Diamonds defender broke the deadlock after 35 minutes when he showed a striker's instinct to sweep home a loose ball.

But he was waxing lyrical about their second goal in the 3-2 victory, which moved them up to second spot in League One after a fifth win on the spin.

In a silky team move, neat play from Adam Frizzel saw him backheel the ball into the path of Dylan Easton and when he threaded the ball through for McGill, the Hearts loanee kept his cool to slot the ball home.

It was a crisp training ground move that paid off and Fordyce said: "Some of the stuff you see in training is ridiculous so we know what the boys are capable of.

"But to get that in a game is incredible.

"Sometimes training is training, so to have the bravery to do it in a game is great.

"It's a special goal, a great team goal and Scotty's finish is a very good one.

"I'm not renowned for scoring goals. I think I've been unlucky this season, I've had a few off the bar, a couple cleared off the line, so it's great to get a goal myself, but the three points are more important.

"But I've been scoring some crackers in training."

The Diamonds are still feeling the effects of their recent Covid struggles and couldn't fill the bench at New Broomfield.

Boss Ian Murray was back to take the reins after testing positive and Fordyce hailed everyone at the club for battling through it to go on their impressive run.

He said: "We've obviously had problems with Covid and probably still have them when you look at the squad.

"We only had 14 fit players so it's a credit to the management team and the players for keeping all these guys fit and raring to go - and keeping the hunger to go out and get results.

"There's a team full of good people in the club all wanting to work for each other and that gets you a long way in football.

"When we get all the boys back fit, it's only going to boost our chances."

Airdrie haven't lost since a December 7 defeat away to Montrose and their latest win saw them leapfrog the Gable Endies, while moving to within eight points of leaders Cove Rangers with a game in hand.

The 29-year-old added: "When you get five wins on the spin in any team it is massive for you.

"We just want to keep putting pressure on Cove.

"If we win the game in hand, we are five points behind them with two games against them still to come.

"There's a long way to go but we just need to keep focused on ourselves."
