Airdrie player/assistant boss Callum Fordyce revealed Adam Frizzell’s fizzing equaliser at Dunfermline was straight off the training ground.
The Diamonds maintained their unbeaten start to the League One campaign after fighting back from Nickolay Todorov’s 68th minute opener to level 10 minutes later with a fine finish from Frizzell.
The attacker arrowed home from Justin Devenny’s knock down in the box to keep Rhys McCabe’s men ahead of the Pars at the top of the table on goal difference.
And No.2 Fordyce was pleased to see their build-up play deliver the equaliser.
He said: “This is a hard place to come and most teams will struggle here so a point is probably a fair result.
“We weren’t at the races first half, but we were a bit better in the second half.
“They probably scored a goal against the run of play.
“That’s football, but we’ve replied with a great finish from Frizz. We discussed it on the pitch and we changed shape a bit and we got a lot of joy.
“We nearly scored just before the goal as well.
“The goal comes from a right centre-half putting a ball in the box, a wing back laying it off and your attacking midfielder scoring.
“It’s stuff we work on in training and it was pleasing to see it come off.
“But the most important thing was at the end of the game, when they [Dunfermline] are throwing bodies forward, the boys stood up to be counted and put their head where it hurts.”
Meanwhile, player/boss McCabe was happy enough to take a point, even if he felt their second half display at East End Park could have merited all three.
He said: “I think given the fact we were 1-0 down and the guys showed good character to come back, the second half performance maybe merited a wee bit more than a point.
“But, all in all, we’ll take it. Coming here and Dunfermline having home advantage, they tried to initiate a press on us and in the first half I didn’t think we were brave enough to break through it.
“Some of the boys looked a bit nervy. But we are a young squad.
“It can be expected coming to this environment but it’s a test of character how you respond, and I thought in the second half the boys were excellent.”
Airdrie now host FC Edinburgh on Saturday.
