Airdrie striker Gabby McGill admits Nikolay Todorov fancied their early penalty in the 5-0 win over Albion Rovers on Sunday – but he was having none of it!
McGill admits the selfish nature of a striker kicked in when Cammy Ballantyne was decked early on in the NL Cup final at Broadwood, with the Diamonds already 1-0 up thanks to the fouled star.
But McGill was delighted to tuck that away and then head Airdrie into a 3-0 interval lead, with Todorov striking twice in the second half as well.
McGill said: “It was a good feeling. My first chance was the penalty, so call me selfish if you want – that’s fine by me because I’m a striker – but when Cammy got fouled I picked up the ball.
“Toddy came up, and I nearly gave it to him to be honest, because he’s a new player to the club, but call me selfish – a striker always wants to score goals, and you’re not going to get a better chance than from the penalty spot, and thankfully I tucked it away.”
McGill was denied a hat-trick in the second half as Rovers keeper Ross Connelly blocked his net-bound effort with a foot, but the Englishman says he will get there.
He said: It was a good save from the keeper. I chested it down and it fell to my weaker side, and I thought ‘just put everything behind it’ but maybe a bit more composure and slot it into the corner.
“But it’s my first game this season, so hopefully that will come over time.
“But I’m really happy to get the two goals at least.”
