Callum Fordyce says Airdrie can take the League One title race down to the wire – but only if they keep winning.
The Diamonds did that with a bit to spare on Saturday, beating Alloa 2-0 at the Indodrill, thanks to a double from striker Callum Smith double.
Club captain Fordyce, 29, was happy to come through his 100th appearance for the club with their unbeaten run intact, but says if they keep the pressure up on Cove they can take the prize.
With a crucial triple-header against Falkirk on Saturday followed by home games against Queen’s Park and Cove Rangers, Airdrie’s fate could be in their own hands.
But Fordyce voiced a note of caution, pointing out that Airdrie are the chasing pack.
He said: “If we win our games we have a chance of winning the title.
“We need to take each game as it comes, we don’t want to look too far ahead, and we’ve got to win.
“That is basically the be-all and end-all, we have to win our games.
“In doing that, especially against teams round about us in the top half of the table, we would give ourselves a right good chance of it going down to the wire and being in with a shout for the title.
“Cove is the big game for us, if we beat Queen’s Park and Falkirk, which are tough games. Going into the Cove game, we know ourselves that if we get a result against them then we’ve given ourselves a right good chance for that final push.”
Former Dunfermline and Livingston defender Fordyce added: “Winning the league would be massive.
“It was our objective at the start of the season and it’s still the objective now, to keep pushing to the end and win it. I was lucky enough to win it when I was at Dunfermline, and it was a great feeling then.
“But there’s a long way to go, we’re not getting ahead of ourselves.
“We’re still the ones chasing Cove, so we need to focus on winning the games.
“Cove are in a position that’s better than us at the moment and we’re the chasing pack – we need to go after them.”
Boss Ian Murray, meanwhile, praised his team for their hard graft in getting over the line against Brian Rice’s side.
He said: “The boys did really well, it was a good performance.
“It was a tricky one. It’s a hard place to go, a difficult pitch, a new manager - all those things rolled into one made it a tricky game.
“We’ve always had tough games against Alloa this season, especially away from home.
“It’s the first game of the last quarter and we’ve started it really well. It was a solid performance and full credit to the players for digging out a really good result.”
