Airdrie boss Rhys McCabe says homework pays off in thumping win over Montrose

Rhys McCabe says doing his homework led to his side sweeping Montrose aside 4-0 at New Broomfield this afternoon.

And the Diamonds player-boss reckons his side showed how good they are with their resounding triumph.

Airdrie ran riot against the Gable Endies, with Lewis Jamieson’s hat-trick added to by a Craig Watson header, to notch their first league win in six games, moving them up to sixth in the League One table.

McCabe pointed to a 4-2 defeat at Montrose at the start of this month as inspiration for today’s win.

He said: “It clicked today. We took things I identified from the previous game a couple of weeks ago, what worked for us.

“Although we went up there and the 4-2 scoreline wouldn’t suggest we were in the game, we had something like 26 shots on goal.

“It was that basic error or lapse in concentration that had cost us.

“Today we emphasised the importance of keeping a clean sheet and being solid at the back, and it gives you a platform for your attacking lads to go and perform.”

McCabe added: “We owed it to ourselves given the last few results, and I said that to the boys, that if we brush up on the basic mistakes we had been making, prior to today, we’re not a million miles away.

“A lot of that is down to confidence, and you get that with a young squad.

“I’m delighted for LJ because I think he’ll tell you himself he’s been off it in the last few weeks.

“He’s been frustrated, he knows he can give more, but I think you saw there what his strengths are, his running in behind, sharpness, pace, and intelligence of when to go when Calum Gallagher dropped into the pocked to link the play.

“He recognises that, stretches the game in behind, and I think he caused their back line problems all day.”
