Airdrie player-boss Rhys McCabe says fans saw a different side to the Diamonds, as they battled out a 1-0 win over Clyde that takes them up to third in League One.
Charlie Telfer’s 50th-minute strike was enough to separate the sides at New Broomfield, following a half where Clyde probably edged it on chances created.
Kyle Doherty headed narrowly over the bar and Cameron Salkeld struck the right post with a fierce shot, while at the other end, Calum Gallagher fired over before Telfer tested Neil Parry with an angled shot.
The Diamonds were more on it in the second half and the introduction of winger Lewis McGregor was a constant thorn in Clyde’s side, with Airdrie denied at least one strong penalty claim.
McCabe was pleased with the result, if he maybe had misgivings about the performance.
He said: “I’m pleased with the result and to get the three points. In terms of the performance levels, we knew before the game that it wasn’t going to be a performance like last week’s was [4-0 win over Alloa], it was going to be more nitty-gritty.
“I think you saw a little bit of a different side of us today.
“It was a battling performance out there. Even towards the end, it became a little bit frantic, going end-to-end, and it was up to us to settle the game down and pick out opportunities.
“We’re pleased to get the three points, but there’s plenty to work on.”
Former Morton winger McGregor tore his way up and down the right wing, creating chances for Airdrie that they ultimately didn’t take, but McCabe says he also provided moments of solace.
He said: “We brought on Lewis McGregor who changed the game for us, gave us that natural pace and when we were under pressure in midfield, when it was really tight and hectic, we had that out-ball to go a little bit more direct and use his pace.
“He caused them all sorts of problems.
“I think the second one was a penalty, again I’m not going to say what was and wasn’t – from where I was in the middle of the pitch it’s hard to see.
“I don’t know how much of the first one he gets, but from where I was at the second one hes got his hands on his back and has pushed him.
“I know Lewis’s touch isn’t great, but he’s got across him, which I ask all my forwards to do, to get across the defender.
“But regardless of whether it is or isn’t a penalty, he was a constant threat as soon as he came on, and I’m sure the left-back will be desperate to get home!”
