Airdrie have claimed big advantage in League One with fast start, says Rhys McCabe

Rhys McCabe watched his Airdrie side soar to the top of League One and says they have a big advantage compared to this time last season.

The Diamonds failed to win any of their first three games last season, but they have got off to a flier with Saturday’s thumping 4-0 win over Falkirk backing up last week’s opening day triumph in Peterhead.

After watching his side demolish the Bairns with a Calum Gallagher double added to by strikes from subs Gabby McGill and Salim Kouider-Aissa, player-boss McCabe said: “It’s a good start, all we can ask for is to go out and try to get the three points.

“We’re delighted to get that, but it’s forgotten about now from my end. The game’s done, the result is done and we go again next week.

“But last season, if you look at the first three games with no wins, it was almost like we were trying to catch teams right away.

“It’s a real advantage that you go out and start the season on six points, and it has almost given us a little kickstart to build momentum, so it’s a big thing.

“It’s about tweaking and changing that mentality, that we’re winners, we’re here to win, and performance comes second.

“It’s great that we came away with four goals, and the second-half performance was excellent.

“But I’m not too bothered about that, because we’ve come away with three points, which is the most important thing.”

McCabe was pleased with his side’s showing as they blew Falkirk away with a brilliant second-half display, and he paid tribute to striker Gallagher after grabbing his first goals of the new campaign.

He added: “Gal is clever, he occupies defenders really well.

“I think he’ll tell you himself that link-up play and different parts of the game, that’s not Gal’s strength.

“But what he does give you is that work-rate, endeavour, physicality and he knows where the goal is.”

Airdrie are on the road this Saturday to face Queen of the South, who dropped down from the Championship last season

“I know Willie [boss Willie Gibson] well, he’ll have them organised,” McCabe insisted.

“They took a sore loss to Clyde in the first game and will feel they’ve got something to prove, especially at home.

“But we will be looking to go down there and approach it in the right way, make sure we do our homework, and we will be going there to win.”
