Airbus strike threat returns after workers reject new pay deal

Airbus workers rejected an improved pay deal - with strike action now back on the table. Around 3,000 Unite members at Airbus voted overwhelmingly to strike in January after turning down an "unacceptably low" pay offer for 2021 - understood to be 2.7%.

But the action was suspended when a new offer was made to workers at Broughton in North Wales and Filton, near Bristol. The offer included a lump sum for the current financial year which worked out at 5.1% of basic pay.

There was then an offer of a 5.1% consolidated increase from April 1 until the end of the year followed by another 3% consolidated increase on all rates of pay from January 1 2023 to May 31 2023.

A new ballot was held and today it was revealed that members had rejected the new pay deal - putting strike action back on the agenda.

A spokesman for Airbus said: "We are extremely disappointed that our latest improved pay offer has been rejected. Airbus has always wished to avoid damaging industrial action and will discuss next steps with the Trade Union

"The Company is still recovering from the impact of the Covid-19 pandemic and we are yet to understand in detail the impact of EU sanctions against Russia as a result of the ongoing situation in Ukraine. We consider the offer put forward was highly competitive compared to both the U.K. market as well as all other pay offers in our Company, and reflected the reality of this operating environment."

Unite have been asked to comment.
