AirBnb customer fumes after 'pet friendly property' charges her over dog hair

An angry AirBnb customer called Maddie has hit out after she was charged an extra cleaning fee for leaving behind pet-fur, even though the rental listed itself as 'pet-friendly.'

Since posting on social media, the property now says 'no pets.'

Maddie says she was excited to find a beautiful cottage for a little trip, so much so that she even checked in her German shepherd, Judge, in on the booking before arrival.

The three-bedroom house was listed as the ‘Travel Haus: Stunning Cottage in German Village’ and is based in Columbus, Ohio, US. It has 4.96 out of five stars on AirBnb and almost no complaints.

Maddie says she had a great time, but after she checked out, she received a message from the owner that set her off. The host, Amanda, wrote to Maddie saying, “Maddie, my cleaner is at the house and has informed me that you had a pet with you.”

“This house is not a pet-friendly home and will now require additional cleaning due to the amount of pet hair that was left behind before the next guest. I need to charge you an additional cleaning.”

Maddie argued back that the house was listed as pet-friendly and her dog was checked in on the booking, and that any extra cleaning should have been included in the original cleaning fee. She posted: “I hate Airbnb. I checked out and received a message from the host saying they have to charge me an additional cleaning fee because pets aren’t allowed.

"Your listing literally says pets allowed. I even included my dog on the booking,” added the fuming client.

The exchange has left the internet divided, with other Airbnb hosts siding with Amanda.

One woman commented, "I mean she ultimately didn't charge you and now you're doxxing her business and left a really excessive amount of hair on her property. That's pretty fugged."

Another Airbnb user said: "Definitely say no. Also, when you book with a pet included you don’t see it but the rate is higher than it would be without a pet! That’s already built in!"

Airbnb commented on the matter and said it has been resolved. They were able to reach out to the host and the customer will not be charged.
