Air Force One flies over Wales as President Joe Biden arrives in Cornwall for G7 Summit

Air Force One was spotted flying over Wales as Joe Biden arrived for his first overseas visit since becoming US President.

The plane carrying Mr Biden and his wife Jill was seen on the radar flying over Swansea and south Wales around 7pm on Wednesday (June 9) before it landed at RAF Mildenhall, Suffolk, just after 7.30pm.

Their eight-day visit will take in this week's G7 summit in Cornwall as well as face-to-face meetings with the Queen and Boris Johnson.

Air Force One is the official air traffic control call sign for a United States Air Force aircraft carrying the President of the United States.

It is one of the most recognisable symbols of the presidency, with countless references in films and not just in American culture but across the world.

The plane is emblazoned with the words “United States of America,” the American flag, and the Seal of the President of the United States.

According to the White House website: "Air Force One is equipped with advanced secure communications equipment, allowing the aircraft to function as a mobile command center in the event of an attack on the United States."

A large crowd of US Air Force personnel and their families were waiting for him inside a hangar at RAF Mildenhall.

The President visited RAF Mildenhall because the Suffolk base is home to the 100th Air Refuelling Wing, the only permanent US Air Force air refuelling wing in the European theatre.

The crowd rose to their feet shortly before 8pm in preparation for his arrival, with US flags decorating the walls along with a Union flag.

In a speech, the President said the US-UK alliance was the "strongest military and political alliance in the history of the world", but added it needed to be "modernised" to protect against past threats and new challenges.

He then met US military personnel stationed at the base before he headed to Carbis Bay near St Ives, where the leaders of Britain, Germany, France, Italy, Japan and Canada will gather for three days to discuss the pandemic and climate change among other issues.

Mr Biden is scheduled to meet the Prime Minister for face-to-face talks on Friday. This will be the first time the two men will have met in person.

When the summit ends on Sunday, the President and First Lady will meet the Queen at Windsor Castle.

Mr Biden will then depart for Brussels where he will attend a NATO summit and a joint US-EU summit before then heading to Geneva for a bilateral showdown with Russian President Vladimir Putin.

Officers have admitted that policing protests taking place around the G7 summit in Cornwall will be "challenging".

Devon and Cornwall Police confirmed that around 40 groups have contacted the force to confirm their intention to protest at the event, which takes place at the Carbis Bay Hotel from Friday to Sunday.

However, a number of other groups - including those forming the Resist G7 Coalition - have said they will not liaise with police.

Over the past week, 5,000 mutual aid officers have arrived in the area from forces across the UK. They will join 1,500 officers and staff from Devon and Cornwall Police at the event.

More than 100 police dogs will be working at the G7 summit, though no police horses are due to be there.
