Air fares on three popular domestic routes are cheaper by 3.8-14% for the Songkran festival from this Friday, the transport minister said on Wednesday.

Suriya Juangroongruangkit said fares on six airlines flying between Bangkok and Chiang Mai, Krabi and Phuket were capped at 3,000 baht per trip, one-way.

Air fares on Friday, when the Songkran festival exodus is expected to begin, were 2,501-3,000 baht for the Phuket route, 2,001-2,500 baht for Chiang Mai and 2,501-3,000 baht for Krabi.

Compared with fares during the New Year festival, the average cost dropped 9.8% on the Bangkok-Phuket route, 14% for Bangkok-Chiang Mai and 3.8% for Bangkok-Krabi, Mr Suriya said.

The six airlines offering domestic flights are Thai Airways International, Thai AirAsia, Bangkok Airways, Thai Lion Air, Nok Air and Thai Vietjet.
