Air ambulance lands as girl trapped under car in Blackwood

An air ambulance landed at the scene of an accident in Blackwood on Friday morning (May 27). It has been reported that a 14-year-old girl became trapped under a car and had to be freed by fire crews.

Gwent Police said that emergency services were called to the scene of a collision between a car and a pedestrian on Highfields Way, Blackwood, just after 8am.

A spokesman said: "Officers attended to assist with traffic management and the collision involved a car and a pedestrian. A 14-year-old girl has been taken to hospital. "

Eye-witnesses reported that there were five fire engines and three ambulances at the scene, and the air ambulance landed nearby.

A neighbour, who did not wish to be named, said: “A girl got knocked over and she was under the car. People tried their best but the fire brigade came and got her out.”

The girl was taken to the University Hospital of Wales by road ambulance, but her condition is not yet known.

A spokeswoman for the Wales Ambulance Trust said two rapid response vehicles, an emergency ambulance and an air ambulance had been sent.

South Wales Fire and Rescue said that crews from Aberbargoed and Ebbw Vale were sent to the scene just before 8.10am, and were at the scene until just before 9am.

Highfields Way was closed for short time as emergency services worked at the scene, and it re-opened just before 9.30am.
