Air ambulance lands after serious crash on M56

An air ambulance was called and parts of the M56 were shut following a serious collision on the motorway this morning.

National Highways and police closed the M56 eastbound between junction 12 for Runcorn and junction 11 for Warrington after a crash, with the incident resulting in six miles of congestion on approach to the scene. Motorists faced of more than an hour, with alert service Inrix reporting that the M56 was completely blocked until around 11.55am, when traffic on the westbound carriageway was released.

An air ambulance has landed at the scene landed at the scene but no details have been released about the number of vehicles involved or the severity of any injuries.

At 11:48am, National Highways tweeted: "The #M56 is now closed eastbound between J12 ( #Runcorn ) and J11 ( #Warrington ) due to a serious collision. Traffic has been released on the westbound carriageway. There are 3 miles of congestion on approach to J12 causing delays of 30 mins above normal travel time."

At 01:03pm, National Highways confirmed that all carriageways had reopened, but have urged motorists to allow time for the congestion to clear.
