Air ambulance called to serious crash on A9 as road closed

The A9 Aviemore to Inverness road has been shut with emergency services attending a two-vehicle crash at Newtonmore, including an air ambulance.

The incident happened around 4.50pm. Two fire crews from Newtonmore and Aviemore, police, and the Scottish Ambulance Service rushed to Newtonmore after a lorry and car collided.

The extent of the injuries of those involved has not been reported. The crash happened at the A9/A86 overpass at Ralia, just south of Newtonmore, with emergency crews arriving around 5.10pm, as traffic ground to a halt in the surrounding area.

A spokesman for the Scottish Fire and Rescue Service said: “We received reports of a crash between a car and a lorry at 4.52pm. Two appliances are currently at the scene to help assist the ambulance service.”

Motorists have been asked to avoid the area and use the diversion routes put in place. An Air Ambulance was reported to be landing in the area around 6pm.

Highland and Island Police said on Twitter : “The A9 is currently closed at Newtonmore, south of Kingussie, due to a two vehicle crash that happened around 4.50pm.

"Emergency services are in attendance and road users are advised to avoid the area.”

Traffic Scotland tweeted to warn that traffic was held up in both directions, with road users told to expect delays and try to use alternative routes.

The update said: "The A9 at Newtonmore is currently closed in both directions due to a road traffic incident. Motorists are advised to expect longer than normal journey times and use an alternative route at this time. Expect delays."
