Islam Hijazy, a devoted aid worker, tragically lost her life in southern Gaza in a case of mistaken identity. Described as dedicated, hardworking, and compassionate by her colleague, Steve Sosebee, the founder of HEAL Palestine, Hijazy leaves behind a legacy of selfless service.
Having worked with Hijazy for over a decade, Sosebee highlighted her role as a proud Arab Palestinian woman and a loving mother to her two children, Maria and Mohamed. The family had faced displacement multiple times due to Israeli offensives, with the recent conflict forcing them to flee northern Gaza, separating Hijazy from her husband.
During their escape, Hijazy courageously carried her children, one in each arm, while tanks fired upon their neighborhood. Despite the chaos, she prioritized her children's safety, leaving behind even her shoe in the frantic escape.
Witnesses reported that before her tragic death, Hijazy had shared with Sosebee the challenges of raising children amidst constant bombardment and displacement. The family had been living in a flooded tent, a stark reminder of the harsh living conditions faced by many in Gaza.
Hijazy's untimely death serves as a poignant reminder of the toll that conflict takes on innocent civilians, especially women and children. Her story reflects the struggles of countless Gazans whose lives have been shattered by the ongoing crisis in the region.
