AI regulation: US, EU and the UK diverge on how to mitigate risks

TECH 24 © FRANCE 24

It’s already proving a very busy September for artificial intelligence (AI) regulation, with tech billionaires meeting US lawmakers, the EU wrangling over a landmark law and the UK concerned that AI might end life as we know it.

Technology editor Peter O'Brien takes us on a whistle-stop tour of the latest movements to mitigate risks stemming from AI, including deepfakes, mistakes in predictive policing, discriminatory hiring algorithms, AI-designed pathogens, automated military decision-making, and the potential for AI to eventually become more powerful than humans.

The United States senate is bringing together the world's top tech entrepreneurs for a series of discussions on what to do, while the United Kingdom will hold a major summit in November.

Meanwhile, the European Union is ahead of the game, entering the final phase of negotiations on a landmark law, the AI Act. Some campaigners aren't happy that a so-called "human rights impact assessment" might be off the table.

Also in this episode, we test the latest AI tool that's dropped everyone's jaws to the floor: HeyGen's video translate, which lets you speak languages that you don't actually speak.
