Agra doctor Sanchit Tyagi is new director of Sports Authority of India

LUCKNOW: Agra native Dr Sanchit Tyagi (37), a 2013 batch Indian Railway Traffic Service (IRTS) officer, has been appointed the director of Sports Authority of India (SAI).

“I would be focused on creating and promoting sports culture across the country for the next three years,” said Tyagi, who is passionate about hockey.

Since 2021, Tyagi has been serving as joint director of National Book Trust of India.

Hailing from a remote village of Burj Atibal of Etmadpur block in Agra, Tyagi cracked the civil services in first attempt and joined the Indian Railway Service in 2013.

An MBBS graduate from Shyam Shah Medical College, Rewa (Madhya Pradesh), Tyagi is known for his innovative ideas to execute tasks.

During his tenure as senior divisional commercial manager in Prayagraj division, he played a key role in coordination of train operations during 2019 Kumbh.

“During the pandemic, Tyagi -the co-founder of SETU helpline-- ensured that the maximum passengers could obtain food and water services during their journey, which railway and local administration had arranged,” said Sanjay Kumar, senior divisional operation manager (freight) in Jhansi.

He added, “Tyagi often went beyond the call of duty to help the needy. In one such case, he along with his doctor father (Dr Narendra Deo, Agra based oncologist) arranged free cancer treatment for an acquaintance of a railway staff.”

Another officer said, “Not many knows, that every year Dr Sanchit along with his family including his father, brother Dr Manoj Tyagi an ophthalmologist in Datia government medical college, sister-in-law Dr Priyanka Tyagi (gynecologist also in Datia government medical college) and uncle Dr Pramod Tyagi (Ophthalmologist) organize free medical camp at their Agra based village for those who can’t afford medical expense. So, athletes can expect a leader who will listen to their grievances at SAI."
