Agony for Ryan Reynolds as last-minute Sheffield United goal denies Wrexham FA Cup giant killing

Ryan Reynolds' celebrations were cut agonisingly short as a last-gasp equaliser from Sheffield United denied Wrexham an FA Cup giant killing and forced a fifth-round replay.

The evening started in the worst possible way for the Welsh club, with Oli McBurnie netting a bullet header inside the opening two minutes to put Wrexham behind. To make things worse, key defenders Aaron Hayden and Jordan Tunnicliffe both trudged off injured inside the first 11 minutes of the match.

But Phil Parkinson's men would not be deterred. As Reynolds pointed out before the match, there are three divisions and 71 league positions between these two sides as things stand, but you'd never have thought it if you watched the Red Dragons' spirited fightback.

James Jones' strike just after the break got Wrexham back on terms before Tom O'Connor put the hosts' noses in front just after the hour mark. Cue bedlam in the directors' box.

It was not to last, though, as Oliver Norwood restored parity just four minutes later.

But it always felt like Wrexham's night. Daniel Jebbison was sent off for an altercation with Ben Tozer on the halfway line and that handed Wrexham another timely boost. Ollie Palmer then thought he had done the business when he belted a half volley from just 12 yards out - but it crashed into the under-side of the crossbar and away from danger.

But Paul Mullin, the man they so often rely on, struck what he thought would be the decisive blow. With just five minutes left on the clock, the striker, who had an astonishing 26 goals to his name this season before this game kicked off, was found in the penalty area before he coolly slotted under Wales international Adam Davies in the Blades' goal.

Reynolds sprinted to the front of his box up in the stands and pumped both of his fists in the direction of the 10,000 or so Wrexham fans inside the Racecourse, letting out an almighty scream while doing so.

Again, though, cruelly, the glory would last for the National League side. Deep into injury time, John Egan latched on to a corner at the back post and bundled in an ugly goal to take the tie to a replay. Phil Parkinson leant back and stared at the heavens. Reynolds put his hand to his head in disbelief.

For the neutral, it was a compelling, six-goal thriller. But Parkinson and his team won't see it that way. They will have thought they were good value for the win.

All is not lost, of course, Wrexham will still be in the pot when the draw takes place on Monday night, they will be ball number four.

Fifth-round ties will played in the midweek commencing Monday, 27 February. Whether Reynolds, or co-owner Rob McElhenney, are able to attend that will depend on the outcome of their replay with the Blades.

However, as ever for Wrexham and boss Phil Parkinson, focus firmly remains on the league and promotion. And as things stand, they sit atop the National League, level on points with Notts County but with a game in hand.
