Former Labor minister Bill Shorten has weighed in on Trump’s trade war and urged the government to “push back” harder with our own “dollar-for-dollar” tariffs on US products.
Anthony Albanese said “a range of propositions” have been sent to the US, but no reciprocal tariffs have been mentioned. Meanwhile, Peter Dutton has expressed concern that the US could impose more tariffs on other Australian goods, but said he does not think the government should retaliate.
The strongest line has arguably come from our resources minister, Madeleine King. She said on Friday that Australia’s critical minerals were in high demand from the US, but appeared to threaten giving access to other countries instead.

Yuval Abraham, the Israeli director of No Other Land, has criticised a Florida’s mayor’s efforts to evict a local cinema after it screened his Oscar-winning documentary. The film, which is about Palestinian displacement in the West Bank, was made “to reach US audiences from a wide variety of political views”, Abraham said.
